Healthy Snacks About Breakfast Club
Snack Totes

Snack totes are placed at key locations throughout our school.  Students who have forgotten a lunch, or who may still be hungry after eating their lunch, are able to access healthy substitutes to give them fuel throughout the day.  Snack tote items consist of: Nutrigrain bars, cheese & crackers, yogurt, and fruit to name a few.  Special thanks to Breakfast for Learning – the Canadian Living Foundation for supporting this program.

Veggie/Salad Fridays!
Students at St. Mary’s have a whole new reason for loving Fridays.  Thanks to a successful pilot last year, the nutrition program has added veggie trays/or caesar salad for every student in the classroom free of charge. Special thanks to Steve’s Independent Grocer who work with our school in the preparation and delivery of these items.  If you would like to make a donation to go towards the costs of ensuring this program continues, please send it in your child's agenda in an envelope marked Veggie/Salad Donation.  Thank you!

Breakfast is served in the school gym, Monday to
Friday, 9:00 a.m. until 9:15 a.m.
Students work together with parent volunteers
in the preparation of this important start to the day.

Menu items at Breakfast Club vary day-to-day but consist of whole wheat toast with margarine or jam, juice & water, fruit, yogurt, cheese, hot and cold cereals and milk. Currently we are serving up to 80 students a day.

Breakfast Club is open to all students of St. Mary’s school and is free of charge to all attendees. This helps ensure that no child feels stigmatized for attending Breakfast Club.

Why have a Breakfast Club? Call for Volunteers!

Research indicates that as many as 42% of children are going to school without eating breakfast. Children who haven't eaten breakfast cannot concentrate on their studies.

Why are children not eating before coming to school?
Often, parents leave for work before the children leave for school, and the child doesn't eat before heading off to school. Sometimes they have to catch buses very early in the morning and aren't hungry, but by the time they arrive at school, they're famished. Some of the children we feed are from low-income families, where try as they might to stretch a dollar, there simply isn't enough money for all the nutritious food they need

If you are able to spare an hour in the morning between 8 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. why not come in and help in our Breakfast Club kitchen?  To contact our coordinator Jayne Girouard please leave a message at the school office at 613-257-1538.

If you would like to send in a monetary donation, it will be used to purchase one of the many discounted menu items available through the Grocery Foundation of Canada’s Toonie’s for Tummy’s Fund
Receipts are available upon request.
